Syracuse runners earn 8 medals at Friar Invitational, Tom Jones Memorial Invitational

This weekend, Syracuse split up to participate in the Friar Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island and the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.

At the Friar Invitational, Sheridan McGadden and Olivia Etienvre were the first to race for Syracuse — placing second with 15.57 and third with 15.76, respectively — in the women’s 100m hurdles. On the men’s side, Naseem Smith and David Peters attended the 110m hurdles, crossing the line with 14.70 and 14.83 and occupying first and second place.

In the women’s 400m, Catriona McKeown placed sixth with her best of 1:00.17. Kristine Krumpfer and Ariel Haywood placed eighth and ninth with 1:02.35 — a personal record — and 1:05.20, respectively.

In the men’s 800m run, Alexander Segarra made a great improvement with the comparison to his previous best record of 1:55.62, posting a new best time of 1:51.85 and placing fifth. Ryder Kriley also broke his record, finishing in 1:56.95 at 22nd place.



Three male and three female runners competed for SU in the one mile race. On the women’s side, Abigail Spiers finished in 4:50.58 and ranked fifth. Shanley Koekemoer, who placed 18th, produced her best of 5:06.82, while Lucy Zombek completed the race in 5:47.34 to earn 36th place.

On the men’s side, Karl Winter earned the runner-up in 4:00.63, followed by Kevin Robertson who finished in fourth with his best record of 4:02.08. Nathan Henderson placed seventh with a time of 4:03.79.

Bethany Steiner was the lone runner for the women’s 3000m steeplechase, finishing her debut of the event in 11:12.82 and placing fourth.

Syracuse had eight women participate in the 5000m, with six of them ranked in top 10. Shona McCulloch made 16 seconds of progress in her record, finishing in 16:35.31 and winning the event. Ivy Gonzales also took third place with 16:41.02. Olivia Joly, who placed fifth, completed in 17:05.61, while Caroline Kirby and Emily Nugent posted their best records of 17:10.86 and 17:13.89 to earn seventh and eighth place, respectively. Reilly Zink finished in 10th place with 17:17.21. Following the rest of two runners, Madeline Heintz placed 11th, finishing in 17:22.95. Siobhan O’Keefe completed her debut of the event in 18:15.28 to earn 19th place.

In the men’s 5000m, Silas Derfel produced his best record of 14:07.95, placing seventh overall. Jack Whetstone and Alex Herbst placed 20th and 21st, finishing in 14:38.00 and 14:39.07, respectively. Matthew Dragon completed in 15:04.03 and ranked 31st. Kamari Miller and Patrick Malone both finished their 5000m debut in 15:09.07 and 15:46.72 to earn 32nd and 45th, respectively.

At the Tom Jones Invitational, Trei Thorogood raced the men’s 200m, finishing in 20.87 and placing 20th overall.

Following the 200m dash was the 400m hurdles. On the women’s side, Shaleah Colaire (32nd) and Kirstyn Schechter (40th) crossed the line in 1:00.09 and 1:03.27. On the men’s side, Xayvion Perkins (20th) and Elijah Mallard (25th) both clinched to the top 25 of the race and produced their best records of 51.60 and 51.89, respectively.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, Jaheem Hayles earned third overall with a time of 13.49, rising to top 10 nationally in men’s 110m hurdles. Emmanuel Joseph (14.31) and Anthony Vazquez (14.46) placed 28th and 32nd in the prelim and missed qualifying to the final.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Colaire finished in 30th with 13.83 in the heat. CJ Fox and Schechter finished in 14.67 and 14.79 to place 44th and 45th, respectively. No one from SU qualified for the final.

Thorogood continued to refresh his personal record, posting a time of 10.48 in the men’s 100m dash and ranking 30th among 60 competitors.

Syracuse will leave for Albany, NY and Winston-Salem, NC for the Bobbi Palma UAlbany Spring Classic and Wake Forest Invitational on Friday.
